South African electrical equipment manufacturer MV Switchgear has been awarded a contract to supply 149 units of its GELPAG Solid Insulated Switchgear (SIS) for underground substations at the copper mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The units, scheduled for delivery in August 2023, address the mine’s harsh underground conditions, including high humidity and dust, which necessitated upgrading to more robust switchgear solutions.
The GELPAG SIS, utilizing solid dielectric insulation, offers enhanced durability compared to traditional Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) in challenging environments. To accelerate production, MV Switchgear has initiated localized manufacturing of key components such as LV compartments, internal arc ducting, and custom cable termination drop-down boxes in collaboration with its overseas OEM partner. This strategy has reduced lead times by 30%, enabling parallel production of core and locally sourced parts. Additionally, the company developed a standardized LV plug-and-socket interface and a dedicated wiring test rig to ensure operational reliability before assembly.
This contract follows MV Switchgear’s prior delivery of 233 Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS) panels to the same mine. The shift to SIS underscores the technology’s adaptability in extreme industrial settings. Design and Development Manager Rhett Kelly highlighted that GELPAG’s demand has surged since its 2020 South African market debut, with localized production positioning the company to serve broader African mining and energy sectors.
As renewable energy and mining sectors drive demand for medium-voltage infrastructure, MV Switchgear continues to strengthen its foothold in Africa through innovation and supply chain optimization, reinforcing its leadership in power solutions across the continent.
